Dr. Jessica Stallman, of Healthy Beginnings Chiropractic, has extensive post-graduate training and education in the brainstem and the upper cervical spine along with certification and expertise of pediatric and per/postnatal care.

Our goal is not to treat the disease, but to restore head and neck malposition, reconnecting the “brain to body communication,”
and thereby allowing the body to heal on its own without the use of potentially dangerous drugs or surgery.

Diabetes is the fifth deadliest disease in the United States and a growing epidemic worldwide.  Roughly, one out of every three men and two out of every five women born in the year 2000 will suffer from diabetes in their lifetime.

A study published in the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research illustrated the positive effects of upper cervical chiropractic when used as part of an integrative treatment for adult on-set diabetes diagnosed by a medical doctor. The average person may not recognize how diabetes and chiropractic are connected. What does the back or neck have to do with blood sugar?

If the nerve supply from the upper neck or middle back (the two areas that supply the pancreas) are obstructed, pancreatic function suffers; maybe in its ability to produce enzymes to digest proteins, fats, and carbohydrates, or insulin production might be affected, or both. Blood sugar and digestion become unbalanced, resulting in either diabetes or hypoglycemia.

Have you ever had a "gut-wrenching" experience? Do certain situations make you "feel nauseous"? Have you ever felt "butterflies" in your stomach? We use these expressions for a reason. The gastrointestinal tract is sensitive to emotion, which communicates to our body through the nervous system and endocrine system. The brain has a direct effect on the stomach. This connection goes both ways. A troubled intestine can send signals to the brain, just as a troubled brain can send signals to the gut because of their intimate connection.

Clinical evidence continues to suggest that a stressed nervous system may be a key factor in the development of many digestive orders. Upper cervical care has “given life back” to countless digestive disorder sufferers by reducing the irritation or injuries to the nerves that supply the GI and/or immune systems.

Most ear infections may be caused by the inability of the eustachian tube to open or close properly.  A lack of drainage leads to fluid accumulation in the inner ear with inflammation.  This provides the perfect environment for bacteria to grow and multiply creating chronic ear infection. A traumatic birth or even regular birth process has enough force to cause a misalignment in the top two bones in the neck.  Current research concludes that 8 out of 10 infants are born with a misalignment of the neck.  Upper cervical care enables the inner ear to pen and drain which, in turn, allows the body to resist the buildup of fluid and possible infection.

Clinical trials have shown that upper cervical chiropractic care can significantly reduce blood pressure in patients with hypertension.  "This procedure has the effect of not one, but two blood-pressure medications given in combination," study leader George Bakris, MD, tells WebMD. "And it seems to be adverse-event free. We saw no side effects and no problems," adds Bakris, director of the University of Chicago hypertension center.

The brain and brainstem play a critical role in regulations of blood pressure. When the top two bones in the upper neck become locked in a misalignment as little as a half a millimeter out of position; it does not cause any pain but it pinches the base of the brain.  This blockage upsets the control centers located in the brainstem and may affect blood pressure.

Migraine headaches can be a source of immense anxiety in your life.  It is extremely difficult to live with the possibility of getting a migraine at any moment.  While eliminating triggers can be important, it is much more important to address the underlying cause of the migraine.  Traumas from car accidents or sports injuries such as a concussion or even poor posture and biomechanics can lead to instability in the upper cervical spine.   If the top two bones are locked out of position, they can obstruct vascular flow to the brain because the blood vessels that supply the brain become kinked.  Upper cervical care can help correct the misalignment or structural shift in the upper neck and addresses the true cause.

Patients suffering from inner ear disorders can have symptoms ranging from dizziness or vertigo, nausea, hearing loss, and tinnitus (ringing in the ears). There often is a common link with inner ear disorders and injuries to the upper neck typically from a whiplash.  Instability in the upper cervical spine from past trauma such as car accidents or concussions is the reason upper cervical care is so effective in resolving inner ear disorders.
